Houston’s highly anticipated California-based Sprinkles Cupcake ATM has finally opened!
Sprinkles first announced in 2012 that Houston would get a Cupcake ATM at the Highland Village location. More than a year later, it was reported that design delays slowed the ATM’s arrival in the Bayou City. At the time, it was expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2013.
“As we were building Houston’s Cupcake ATM, we began discussions on how the original model could be improved,” said a Sprinkles spokeswoman . “We conceived Version 2.0, which could dispense up to four cupcakes at a time (the original could only dispense one cupcake). Redesigning the machine took longer than we anticipated, but we are so excited to finally be landing in Houston!”
Houston has some stiff competition in the cupcake market. Some of the local favorites include Crave Cupcakes and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique, which both have three Houston-area locations. Gigi’s Cupcakes, another national brand, has five Houston-area locations. There are several other cupcake shops with just one location each and many other bakeries that offer cupcakes, as well.
With the new product offerings, Sprinkles also will be competing with the likes of Tiff's Treats and other bakeries specializing in cookies. The announcement that Sprinkles soon will offer ice cream also comes as a listeria-related recall has stripped Houston — and the entire country — of Brenham, Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries' products.
