Rienzi Dinner: British Tastes and French Wine

One foot into the door of the Rienzi house can overwhelm an individual with the presence of history. There’s a distinct atmosphere about the home, which sits on about four acres of lush wooded landscape in the River Oaks area. Now owned and operated by the Museum of Fine Arts after the original owners, Houston philanthropists Carroll Sterling Masterson and Harris Masterson III arranged to have it donated upon their passing; the home now serves as a haven for rare European decorative art and paintings. It’s definitely a box you must check off on your list of places to visit here in Houston.

It is also said that in its heyday, Rienzi served as a prime venue for parties and social gatherings --- soirees that some might refer to in this day and age as “lit”. That spirit was definitely present for “British Tastes and French Wine”; a pairing dinner hosted by Richard Knight and Travis Hinkle, the executive chef and beverage director (respectively) for new Houston eatery Hunky Dory. The dinner was cultivated expertly to explore the rich history of French winemaking and England’s oft-downplayed influence in popularizing the styles and makes of wine the world has come to know and love today.

Intertwined with slow-braised cuts of beef and Bordeaux from 1985 were Hinkle’s detailed descriptions of how certain wines were born unto the world, and Knight’s explanations behind the inspiration for his takes on classic English fare. All in all, great conversation and even better food and drink made for a tremendous outing. You’ll certainly want to be on the lookout for any events Rienzi may host in the near future.
