For us mid-twenty somethings, we can remember a time when discovering new restaurants happened only by scanning magazine subscriptions, the newspaper, and (mostly) word of mouth. For us, high school and early college years were not spent strategically googling and yelping which new restaurant we should try for dinner, and we can NEVER remember going out with friends and spending the time to photograph our food! How crazy is it to think that we lived in a world before the iPhone?! which, by the way, was not even invented until 2007!! In today’s world of instagram, facebook, pinterest, and yelp, it is entirely possible to find hidden gems instantly… thus making them not so hidden…
Our goal this week was to dig up a few marvelous gems that, despite social media’s best efforts, are somehow not easily discoverable:
• RIVA’S. We truly have no idea how Riva’s isn’t the most popular restaurant on Montrose. Like for real. They have killer Italian food, a super friendly wait staff, and amazingly large portion sizes (we have boyfriends… we know what half of our population looks for when defining a good restaurant). Also, this place is really cute. Its ambiance of twinkly lights is perfect for so many things: date night, girls night out, dinner with your parents, catching up with someone you haven’t seen in forever, etc. We really could go on and on about this place!

• SLIK CHOCOLATE. Some days are just meant for chocolate. To give you an idea about the intensity of our love for chocolate, let’s just say that we both would have received our doctorate in chocolate appreciation if that sort of thing existed. So now that we’ve qualified ourselves as professionals, you can trust us when we say this place produces some pretty amazing chocolate (and a few non-chocolate) desserts! Next time you’re craving something sweet, check out Silk Chocolate’s waffles, crepes, or truffles and your sweet tooth won’t be disappointed.

• ISLAND GRILL. Grilled chicken pita. Grilled chicken pita. We said it twice and used every form of emphasis that Microsoft word would allow in order to get the point across on this one. Their grilled chicken pita is truly the best in town. We know they have other options on their menu, and we’re sure they’re probably pretty good, but honestly this is all either of us has ever ordered at this restaurant. It’s just that good! Again, not sure why this is a “hidden gem” because if it were up to us, every food blogger in Houston would have a feature devoted to Island Grill’s grilled chicken pita!
5709 Woodway Dr Houston, TX 77025
• MOELLER’S BAKERY. We discovered Moeller’s Bakery back in college when we were searching for the perfect dessert for our sorority to serve during rush (go gamma phi!). After taste testing bakery after bakery, one bite into Moellers’ petit fours sealed the deal. These things are like heaven on earth! They are toxically infused with sugar and yet not heavy. Light, fluffy, and pretty, they make the world’s most amazing dessert to serve at any birthday, luncheon, or holiday party!

We hope that you give one of these choices a try. It’s so easy to get lost in the maze of Houston hot-spots, but we are confident that these finds will leave you wishing that you’d ventured off the radar sooner.
