Velvet Taco, a popular fusion restaurant with locations in Dallas, Fort Worth and Chicago, opened its first Houston location on June 22 at 4819 Washington Ave.
The restaurant is a concept of Dallas-based Fork It Over Restaurants LLC, a privately held company that has concepts throughout the southwest and in Chicago. Velvet Taco will be the first Houston-area restaurant for Fork It Over Restaurants.
Another popular Texas-based taco chain, Torchy's Tacos, has also been expanding throughout Houston. But Tex-Mex joints won’t be Velvet Taco’s only competition. The restaurant is nontraditional and serves dishes inspired by global cuisine. Offerings include crisp tikka chicken tacos, Israeli cous cous tacos and Cuban pig tacos, according to a company release.
Velvet Taco’s foray into Houston has been a much-speculated development. In January 2014, the Dallas Business Journal first reported that Velvet Taco was looking for potential locations in Houston. In February, Eater reported Velvet Taco filed for a building permit with Houston for a spot on Washington Avenue. Later that month, the company confirmed the rumors.
By this July, the restaurant hopes to remain open until 3 a.m. on Thursdays and 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, according to CultureMap Houston.
